Webcam imagery help mountain drivers quickly judge the weather and driving conditions on their scenic visit to Idyllwild. With this spirit, we are providing a "bird's eyes" view of Idyllwild from three webcams. The first is located near the town center of Idyllwild. The second cam location is in our nearest town, in terms of driving distance, Hemet. The third locale is 180 degrees in the opposite direction, sunny Palm Springs. The live webcam image below is from Georgias. The camera is facing south and the street you see is North Circle Drive, the main drag of Idyllwild. If you walked down 100 yards to the right, you would be in town center. Captured: Fri 2:20 PM May 9, 2008 ![]() Below is a view from Hemet. THE IDYLLWILD SCRAPBOOK An area of multimedia that we think doesn't get the attention it should is that of 360 degree panorama photography. It simply is the best way to artificially visualize a subject, whether its a landscape, a family photo, or a product shot. The Idyllwild Scrapbook has about 30 such photos in its album. Enjoy !!
Panoramas One of the great things to do in Idyllwild is to photograph. Its seems everything is worthy of a snapshot. Over the years, we have organized about 400 favorite photographs and Quicktime VRs (panoramas) and placed them into a new, searchable online format. The Green Cafe proudly presents ... AROUND TOWN
While living in a small town, I observed two things that seem to be on everyone's mind, the weather and the news. With the weather, we are always concerned about the bad weather thats coming our way, when it will hit, and how long it will stay. In a similar way, the towns folk seem preoccupied with who did what to whom, where, when and for how long. However, unlike the weather, there is something people can do about it. When you see front page headlines about a kitchen screendoor that was viciously torn by some unknown resident or a passed out motorist on the side of the road being booked on suspicion of drunk driving, you can't help but wonder if sometimes the news is manufactured when the reality of small town life doesn't sell enough papers.
It happens not only at the local, but at the national and world levels as well. When a wild animal attacks someone, its BIG time news and a certain spike in the ratings. If a TV station catches someone in the process of a crime, like a hi-speed freeway chase, it prempts all planned programming. The rage of the day are now reality shows that show people competing against other people in a variety of savage ways. Court TV owns the daytime TV programming. Modern media has progressed to the point where there doesn't seem to be much distinction between news and entertainment. Almost 60 years ago, there were individuals who realized where the press was going. One was the great director, Billy Wilder. He made a contemptuous indictment of modern journalists via his masterwork film, ACE IN THE HOLE. Its a cynical look at just HOW powerful a reporter can actually be, especially if he is not particularly ethical or honest. Wilder paints a world where journalists are more story-makers then news reporters. Like many great works in cinema, it was just a bit too much ahead of its time. It failed spectacularly at the box office. People thought it was way too implausible and fantasy driven. ACE IN THE HOLE was lost and unseen for over fifty years when it was rediscovered and re-released. As time has now caught up with Wilder's work, the film seems extremely pertinent and dead on. The story of a small town reporter and the great lengths he will go to for fame seem quite possible. Billy Wilder, who made some really superb films such as DOUBLE INDEMNITY, SUNSET BLVD., THE LOST WEEKEND, THE APARTMENT, and SOME LIKE IT HOT, considered his favorite film. As a great bonus to this week's feature, we will have J. P. Crumrine, Assistant Editor from our local newspaper, The Town Crier, in attendance to answer any questions you may have about the film and the news media. Now is your chance to get that burning question about the press answered. It will also be an opportunity to see filmmaking at its finest. Festivities take place at the Green Cafe in Idyllwild. Everyone is welcome. Food, beverage, and admission are free. We are located at corner of Highway 243 and Saunder's Meadow in Idyllwild. For more information about our weekly film series. PLANET RISE / SET TIMES IN IDYLLWILD Idyllwild is a wonderful place to 'gaze' at the stars, planets, and the moon. Below are the rise & set times (24 hour format) of all the planets in our solar system. The celestial bodies are arranged in chronological rise time order and can be experienced in the Idyllwild area by looking in the lower southeast sky (towards Garner Valley). If the name of the planet is in purple, then it is currently visible under suitable conditions. To view the setting planet, look in the lower southwest sky, towards Hemet.
